This post is sponsored by Summer at Sandy Spring. We hope you enjoy learning about one of the DC area familes' favorite summer camps!

It’s always a delicate balance – giving your kids enriching summer experiences to eliminate the dreaded “summer brain drain,” while also ensuring they’re having fun and staying active. It’s called summer vacation, after all!

If you’ve been struggling to strike the perfect balance, look no further than Summer at Sandy Spring. It’s been a favorite summer destination for kids in the DC area for over 25 years, and the huge array of camp options – adventure camps, fashion camps, STEM camps, and more – ensures there’s something for everyone.

Fun + Enrichment = The Best Summer Ever!

Summer at Sandy Spring serves kids ages 3-16, and offers recreational Friends camps, based on age, and a variety of full and half-day specialty camps.

The youngest campers learn to make friends while safely exploring the big world around them. Little Friends campers (ages 3-4) learn traditional camp games and sports, explore nature, practice yoga, and enjoy lots and lots of water play. It’s the perfect introduction to summer camp for little ones, with flexible schedule options.

For older kids, a typical day of Friends Camp may include playing sports, creating art and music, swimming, paddle boarding, and enjoying group games. On top of that, they get to customize their days by choosing morning and afternoon workshops, or by participating in one of the unique specialty camps offered.

But what about all that hard earned learning that parents want their kids to hold onto during the summer? Well, at Summer at Sandy Spring, there’s a wide variety of programs for campers entering grades 2-8 that are specifically designed to prevent summer learning loss.

Some of the mind-stimulating workshops include:

  • Brain Games
  • Einstein by Design
  • Academics Workshop
  • Computer Programming
  • Lego Robotics
  • Hands on Science
  • STEAMers

Combine these enriching camps with awesome facilities (did you know the Sandy Spring Friends School has a rock climbing wall, a natural swimming pond, and the country’s largest aerial Adventure Park on its 140 acre campus?), and you’ll quickly see that campers aren’t sacrificing any fun while learning!

Parent-Friendly Camp Features

Summer camp isn’t just a great experience for kids, it’s essential for working parents. Summer at Sandy Spring intentionally provides flexible options for families to help make camp as convenient as possible.

Lunch and Snacks are Provided

Preparing and packing healthy bagged lunches and snacks can be a challenge for busy parents. Luckily, Summer at Sandy Spring has you covered.

The camp provides all full-day campers with a delicious, chef-prepared lunch and two nutritious snacks each day. These meals are included in camp tuition – no extra charge!

When they’re on campus, campers dine family-style, while campers on field trips get to enjoy bagged lunches.

Summer at Sandy Spring is allergy aware, so parents can be assured the kitchen staff, nurses, and counselors will work together to create specialized meals when needed.

Bus Transportation to and From Camp

There’s nothing like the morning rush trying to get out the door, especially when a parent has to drive out of his or her way to get the kids to camp. For added convenience, Summer at Sandy Spring offers bus transportation to and from camp.

The buses cover 7 regional routes:

  • Bethesda & Tenleytown
  • Columbia
  • Gaithersburg & Wildwood
  • Kensington
  • Rockville
  • Colesville Road
  • Takoma Park

Safety is, of course, of utmost importance. All drivers have commercial bus driving licenses, all buses have passed state inspection, and all buses are owned and operated by Sandy Spring Friends School.

Extended Day Care Options

Need extra care in the mornings or in the early evening? Summer at Sandy Spring has you covered!

The regular camp day runs from 9:00-3:30, but extended day is offered starting at 7:30 in the morning, and again after camp until 6:00 in the evening.

An added bonus for kids ages 7 and up is the awesome “Aftercare in the Trees” program, where they get to play on the campus’ award-winning Adventure Park. Even if you don’t work late, this may be something your kids will want to take advantage of! There’s a drop-in option for campers in this age group.
