Seeking Child Participants for Studies at Georgetown University!
Dear DC Area Moms,
We are the Learning and Development Lab at Georgetown University: a group of researchers studying language learning and child development. We need your help to understand how children learn!
At our lab, we use simple games and activities to understand how children learn languages and other patterns. Our research is made possible through the support of families like yours. We are looking for children between the ages of 4 and 9 to participate in our research studies.
Participating is easy! Right now, all of our studies are conducted online. In the study that we are running right now, your child will learn a made-up language (we call it Silly Speak) by playing a computer game online (with our help). The study consists of two parts, each 20-30 minutes long, which take place on different days. We offer $20 compensation per child.
If you’d like your child to participate in our studies, or if you’d like us to contact you about future opportunities to participate, please sign up at this link: https://bit.ly/3wZORTl
If you could please share this message with parents in your group, we would really appreciate it. We look forward to hearing from you!
Best,
The Research Team at the Learning and Development Lab, Georgetown University

We are a LIVE virtual program working to meet the needs of families with children ages 0-5 years. You can explore our classes with our VESS Curriculum – approved by the Florida School Readiness Program and recognized worldwide for its evidence-based approach to the development of the whole child. Our online program provides children 0-5 years old with the richest and most wholesome early learning experience at home.
Our professional educators have developed a complete experience-based program that targets all academic areas to get children feeling ready and excited about kindergarten, while having in mind that life goes way beyond academics and should also nurture life-long love for learning, independence and an array of Thinking Skills. Literacy, math and science, are all targeted. We are confident that children learn best through fun, hands-on, minds-on exploration, novelty, collaboration, bonding and connection to real life. These concepts are core to any of our classes. Concept Maps, Graphs, Visible Thinking and other brain-based teaching strategies are utilized to help children truly learn and develop their young minds.
Our virtual preschool program fits any family’s schedule, needs and interests. The goal of our program is to promote literacy, mathematical and scientific skills in an engaging hands-on, minds-on format that excites children about learning, getting them ready to thrive in kindergarten and beyond. Children 3-5 years explore academic concepts hands-on and minds-on through cooking, engineering, performing science experiments and exploring books together, allowing them to experience how these concepts work in real life.
Our teachers provide a wholesome learning experience that prepares children academically while also developing critical Thinking Skills: a problem solving mindset, creativity and innovation, analytical skills, a love for learning, social skills, and independence.
Our complete program provides approximately 2 daily hours of live class time in small groups of 11 children divided by age. All classes are offered in 3 different schedules daily. Younger children are offered shorter class times to fit their levels of readiness and interest, all the while including all of these concepts. We currently offer a 2 week free trial.
Hello DC Area Moms! My name is Claudia Smistek and I am a research assistant at BL2. We are doing a research project on how children learn over time. Here is more information listed below if you are interested:
Are you interested in how children learn? We at the Brain and Language Center for Neuroimaging (BL2) are too! We are part of the National Science Foundation and Gallaudet University’s Science of Learning Center, Visual Language and Visual Learning (VL2). In our BL2 Center, we are conducting a study on how [deaf and hearing children] learn, particularly in the areas of language, reading, and other higher cognitive functions (attention and emotion).
We are recruiting children [that have no hearing loss, use hearing aids, or use cochlear implants]. [Both monolingual (English) or bilingual (English/ASL) who will soon enter the 1st grade are invited to participate]. We will test them before and after their first year of primary schooling. Our studies are designed to be a fun opportunity for both parents and children.
Children will play science games while we measure their brain activity using harmless light (safe with hearing aids and cochlear implants) and their temperature using a thermal camera (touchless). This study has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board at Gallaudet University. Participation is entirely voluntary.
We will pay $20 per hour for your participation and travel to/from our BL2 Center. Children will also receive a small toy!
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please feel free to call our lab at (202) 618-6808 or email us at bl2@gallaudet.edu if you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment.
