Holiday Light Display Details

Mark your calendars and text your family and friends to meet you at the National Cathedral’s ticketed family-friendly Holiday Light Spectacular. The 45 minute event will showcase live music and an indoor light show in the Cathedral. The Cathedral alone is wonderful, but add lights during the holidays and it’s even more majestic. Plus, at the event, enjoy a screening of the 1982 animated film “The Snowman” where a live orchestra will play the movie’s soundtrack. Prepare to hear Musicians play “Carol of the Bells,” “Walking in a Winter Wonderland,” “Silver Bells,” “Snow Day,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Oh What A Night (Late December ’63)” and “Let It Snow.” The event will also include a performance of “Walking in the Air” by the live orchestra from the score of “The Snowman” along with other songs from the soundtrack.

This special event sandwiched between Christmas and New Year is the perfect addition to family-friendly holiday itinerary. Imagine being inside the Cathedral with gorgeous lights projected on the walls and ornate, vaulted ceiling while Christmas music is played. The Holiday Light Spectacular could be described as being inside a “musical snow globe world” in the Cathedral. 2019 is the inaugural year for the Cathedral to host the Holiday Light Spectacular. You don’t want to miss it! It’s the perfect opportunity to don your holiday outfit, continue to enjoy the season, and get some truly Instagramable photos.

To me, the Cathedral has a magical way of encouraging entrants to embrace the reason for the season. The Cathedral exists to be “a house of prayer for all people, conceived by our founders to serve as a great church for national purposes.” Furthermore, entering the Cathedral reminds us of the incredible city and time we live in. We have an opportunity to show our children the gorgeous Cathedral which is significant in our city and country. It’s right at our fingertips and this event is the perfect opportunity to take kids.

Courtney Whittington
Courtney was born and raised in Louisiana where she met her husband (married in 2005). They have moved several times, but finally feel very settled in NW DC after moving back in 2016. She has four energetic kids: Cormac (2010), Evangeline (2013), Solomon (2016), and Antoinette (2019). She thinks motherhood is absolutely wonderful, but is constantly trying to figure out how to manage it all. She spends her days talking Star Wars, playing with legos, doing crafts, having tea parties, and chasing her toddler. Motherhood is wonderful and wild and in 2017 she banded together with other mothers to start DC Area Moms to inspire, learn, and grow together. She loves morning coffee, chocolate, chatting with people since she's an extrovert, a clean house (which is rare these days). She dislikes when her kids don't listen the first time, she abhors littering, and doesn't enjoy shopping.
