Let’s visit the best coffee shops in Maryland. After a hectic time with the kids, is there anything better than a couple solo hours at a coffee shop?
Spoiler alert: there’s not.
Even before I had kids, I loved grabbing my laptop and/or a book, and heading to a cool local coffee shop for some peace… and a flavored latte topped with a little foam heart.
Although, if you find you have to bring the kids along, there are some options there too, so without further ado, here are the 10 Top Maryland Coffee Shops. So, leave your Old Bay at home in exchange for some cinnamon and coffee beans.
The Best Maryland Coffee Shops
1. The Board and Brew in College Park, MD
I found this place by accident while researching a different spot. This one won out. It is a restaurant plus coffee house PLUS…you can play board games! There are 850 games to choose from and that includes games for kids. The games are not expensive at all to rent while you sip on creative drinks like the oreo latte! I also had soup and fried brussels sprouts. Everything was delicious.
2. French Twist Cafe in Sykesville, MD
I have been hearing great things about Sykesville for months, and I am so glad I finally went! This cool, charming town may be small, but it’s grabbed national recognition. And, when paying a visit, you can’t miss the big blue building that is French Twist Cafe. I had a coffee and a savory crêpe with egg, bacon, cheese and syrup. I will 100% be back to check out Sykesville’s mini train for kids.
3. Takoma Bev Co in Takoma Park, MD
This is a great place for DC moms, being that it’s closer to the city. Those who have gone say it is family friendly – especially the outdoor seating area. This place sells coffee of course, but also food and alcoholic drinks.
4. The Family Room in Laytonsville, MD
I have seen this place pop up on some of the mom Facebook groups I belong to and I can’t wait to check it out. There is a store with all kinds of local goods and gifts, ice cream and coffee, of course. They serve locally made food and beverages from a variety of Maryland based vendors.
5. Spoons Cafe in Baltimore, MD
I have found myself visiting Baltimore more often, both with and without my kids. Reviewers say Spoons Cafe is family friendly, although small on the inside. The menu looks incredible and next time I go to The National Aquarium, I will be sure to stop by this coffee shop for an oatmeal cookie latte. Yum!
6. Vigilante Coffee in Hyattsville, MD
We learned about Vigilante Coffee from our Hyattsville Neighborhood Guide (which is a great resource if you are wanting to explore neighborhoods as a family!). Anyway, we went there and were blown away at how gorgeous the coffee shop is. PLUS, the coffee is delicious and they even have a roasting lab that is really fun to see.
7. Java Nation in Rockville, Kensington, & Gaithersburg, MD
Java Nation has amazing coffee and lots of options for food too. This would be a great place for a parent-child day date. With three locations in Maryland, you really have to pop in!
8. Quartermaine Coffee Roaster in Bethesda, MD
Did you know Quartermine was created by the original founders of Starbucks? They offer a large variety of coffee that is curated based on quality. Of course, you can enjoy the actual coffee shop, but they also ship!
9. Dolcezza in Bethesda, MD
Dolcezza is known for its gelato, but have you had their coffee? Located in Bethesda Row, you’ll find coffee that is as well thought out as the gelato. They have four single origin coffees and one decaf coffee. Dolcezza has several locations around the DMV, but really think Bethesda Row is more fun with Dolcezza!
10. Nagadi Coffee in Silver Spring, MD
Visit this Silver Spring based coffee shop for a delicious cup of coffee in a fun atmosphere. They have a single origin beans, a communal set-up with tables, and rotating selections of coffee each week.
