Non-Profit Feature: The Napkin Network

0

The Napkin Network provides diapers, wipes and other baby essentials to DMV moms in need. The group works both directly with individuals and in partnership with other non-profits, including diaper banks and pregnancy centers.

Lindsay Gill founded The Napkin Network at the beginning of 2021, determined to do something that could help moms in the midst of the COVID pandemic.

We caught up with Lindsay recently as she drove toward the beach with a car full of kids. Here are some highlights from our conversation:

A year ago, in 2022, we were in the midst of the U.S. baby formula shortage — and The Napkin Network jumped in to help. Is the crisis over?

“Luckily, it has settled down — but … I wouldn’t say it is completely back to normal.”

The Napkin Network is still accepting donations of unexpired and unopened formula. The group works with Feed the Fridge to get the formula into refrigerators around the D.C. metro area, where moms in need can pick it up.

Have there been any unusual shortages in 2023? (Please say no, but I feel like we have to ask.)

“Over the winter, there was definitely a medicine shortage. There was very low inventory of basically cold medicine, because everyone was so sick. That was another wake-up call: It was hard to find Tylenol. It was hard to find Motrin.”

What makes The Napkin Network’s work — providing baby essentials to families in need — important in the DMV?

“The Napkin Network — we’re not recreating the wheel in the sense that there are lots of other nonprofits who collect baby essentials, lots of groups we partner with. What makes us different is that we’re a social community of moms. We’re able to bring moms together almost daily through our events and through our social media. [Many small nonprofits] just aren’t receiving enough money. There’s a lack of funds, a lack of products to go around. There’s room for everybody to help these moms.”

What’s the best way for someone in the DMV to help The Napkin Network?

“Number one: Donate your items. Go through your closet, go through your baby drawers. If you have diapers, wipes or baby formula, you can donate them to The Napkin Network.”

What’s up next for The Napkin Network?

“We have something cool on the horizon. Stay tuned!”
