Why I Love Birth Centers and Think You Might Too

0

I’m currently pregnant with our second baby and going through all the joys of pregnancy again [read: I’ve been nauseous for three months but know that there will be joy!!!]. My husband and I are in the process of all the big and little decisions. A HUGE decision that every expectant mom makes is where they’re going to give birth and their providers. I want to share why we LOVE birth centers and think you may too!

Why I Chose a Birth Center

At first, the only thing I knew was that I wanted the opportunity to give birth with as little medical intervention as possible. I needed providers who supported that desire. This originally led me to a birth center. Then I quickly realized there are many other benefits of choosing a birth center with Certified Midwives. The care you receive is compassionate, professional, and kind. Every appointment is 45-60 minutes so that the midwives can answer questions and address any concerns. Time with the midwives is filled with gentle reminders on what to do to take care of yourself and your baby. My dream was realized when I had the most amazing first labor and delivery. Afterwards, I also had wonderful postpartum care. For my current pregnancy, I know that is where we will return for all our prenatal care.

A Less Stressful Pregnancy

No matter what, pregnancy is going to come with stressors. It’s going to look vastly different for every mom. No two pregnancies, labors, or births are the same. I feel that being at a birth center with Certified Midwives removes stressors for me. I feel heard, seen, and understood. Through my whole pregnancy, birth, and postpartum I felt supported. Towards the end of my pregnancy at my 40 week appointment, my blood pressure spiked. At no point did I feel like there was an underreaction or overreaction to what was happening. I did some extra tests and came in a few extra times but the week I went “overdue” was absent of additional panic.

Things to Consider

It is important to note a few limitations about birthing centers. In general, birth centers only take low-risk pregnancies. Each birth center will have different ways that they define low-risk, but there are various circumstances and medical needs that are not compatible with the birth center setting. Maybe a home birth would be better suited to your family’s needs. You can read about some considerations about a home birth here.
