For young, aspiring performers, few opportunities are as enriching and transformative as the Young Artists of America’s (YAA) Summer Performing Arts Intensives. Each summer, Young Artists of America, a nonprofit founded in 2011 by two local professional musicians, brothers Rolando and Kristofer Sanz, extends their school year programming into summer offerings for ages 8 to 18. An immersive and comprehensive experience for students looking to advance their talents in musical theatre, dance and acting, students come from all over the globe to join their overnight and daytime camps and intensives located at various campuses in the Washington, DC Metro Area.

This program not only provides rigorous training but also fosters creativity, collaboration, artistic growth, and feeling of belonging. There’s no surprise why YAAs Summer Arts Intensives have been named one of the “Best Summer Camps” by Bethesda Magazine and Washington City Paper years running.

A Focus on Excellence and Professionalism

“This is the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done. I’ve never been more inspired to work as hard as I can.”

– YAA SPAI Camper

Young Artists of America Summer Performing Arts Intensives are designed to help students refine their craft while gaining exposure to professional-level artistry. Participants work closely with experienced instructors and artists from renowned institutions and professional companies, making it an invaluable opportunity for young performers to hone their skills. These summer programs cater to students of various age groups, starting at age 8 to 18, ensuring a learning experience tailored to different skill levels and aspirations.

Each intensive is structured to maximize hands-on learning and practical performance experience. The curriculum is designed to challenge students, encouraging them to push their limits and deepen their understanding of their respective focus. Whether through acting, music, or dance, each participant is encouraged to explore the boundaries of their creativity, all while receiving personalized coaching and mentorship from experts in the field.

Diverse Program Offerings

“All of the counselors put so much effort into the production. It makes you just want to work so hard.”

– YAA SPAI Camper

One of the unique aspects of Young Artists of America Summer Performing Arts Intensives is the variety of programs available. The organization offers overnight and daytime programs which combine training in acting, singing, and dancing and culminates in performance. They also offer specialized intensives for dancing and acting, for those looking for a more focused program.

A Collaborative and Supportive Environment

“This place is my home. It’s my family. I love it here.”

– YAA SPAI Camper

A core value of YAA’s Summer Intensives is its emphasis on collaboration. Students not only receive individualized attention but are also given opportunities to work in groups, whether as part of an ensemble, cast, or ensemble of dancers. This collaborative environment helps students develop teamwork skills, adaptability, and the capacity to communicate and work with others in a creative setting. Campers often report feeling “at home” at YAA and many express feeling like they finally found “their people.”

Furthermore, many students leave the program with lasting connections—both with their peers and their instructors—that can provide a strong foundation for their future artistic endeavors.

Courtney Whittington
Courtney was born and raised in Louisiana where she met her husband (married in 2005). They have moved several times, but finally feel very settled in NW DC after moving back in 2016. She has four energetic kids: Cormac (2010), Evangeline (2013), Solomon (2016), and Antoinette (2019). She thinks motherhood is absolutely wonderful, but is constantly trying to figure out how to manage it all. She spends her days talking Star Wars, playing with legos, doing crafts, having tea parties, and chasing her toddler. Motherhood is wonderful and wild and in 2017 she banded together with other mothers to start DC Area Moms to inspire, learn, and grow together. She loves morning coffee, chocolate, chatting with people since she's an extrovert, a clean house (which is rare these days). She dislikes when her kids don't listen the first time, she abhors littering, and doesn't enjoy shopping.
