Although online shopping at big box shops usually gets the best of me, when it comes to eating out, I try to visit local alternatives to big chains. This means that I try to bypass places like Starbucks, Shake Shack, and Applebee’s as much as possible and spend my money helping the small businesses owned and run by our neighbors. The great thing about the DC area is there are lots to choose from!
Coffee Shops and Cafes
There are so many great coffee shops around, so skip Starbucks and check these out!
- DC: A Baked Joint, The Coffee Bar, and The Wydown
- VA: Caboose (also a brewery and restaurant) and Misha’s Coffeehouse
- MD: The Board and Brew and French Twist Cafe
Best for Families
Don’t get me wrong – every now and then I love hitting up an Olive Garden or TGI Fridays. You know what you’re getting and big chains are usually extremely family friendly. However, there are so many other alternatives around! And don’t forget to get out guides from DC Area Moms on the area’s best pizza places and patios.
- DC: Ted’s Bulletin (multiple area locations) and The Coupe (bonus is they open really early for those with kids who are early risers)
- VA: McLean Family Restaurant, Ruthie’s All Day
- MD: Scratch Kitchen, Busboys and Poets (multiple area locations)
Adult Drinks and Eats
I’ve had many business dinners at Capital Grille or Ruth Chris. But when it comes to a night on the town with friends or my husband, we truly have some extraordinary places to not miss out on!
- DC: Rose’s Luxury, Swingers Golf Club
- VA: Dogwood Tavern, Inn at Little Washington
- MD: Duck Duck Goose, Bobby McKey’s Dueling Piano Bar
Quick Eats
Big chain fast food and fast casual places have their time and place (hello road trips!), but the area has some wonderful local options.
