The thought of getting your family, all their luggage, and those essential car seats to the airport can feel overwhelming. Especially when you’re staring down an early morning flight or a departure from an airport that feels like it’s in another state (looking at you, IAD and BWI!). We’ve all been there, trying to figure out the best way to get everyone there safely and on time.
So, instead of panicking about expensive parking or traffic, here’s a guide to navigating those DMV airport trips with your precious cargo.

Relying on Your Community
Ask a Friend or Neighbor: This is often the most straightforward option, especially for shorter trips to airports like DCA. Getting a ride from someone you know can be a stress-free way to start your journey.
Pro-Tip: Make sure to thank them generously with a coffee or a Venmo for gas. It’s a great way to strengthen your community ties while also getting a much-needed favor.
Utilizing Ride Services
Ride Shares & Taxis with Car Seats: The idea of a ride showing up with a car seat ready to go is appealing. You can schedule services like Uber Car Seat or call a local taxi company in advance to request a car seat.
Things to Consider: While convenient in theory, this option can be a bit of a gamble. The car seat provided might not be the right size or type for your child, and there’s a chance the service might not arrive with the requested seat at all. It’s a good idea to have a backup plan and to be prepared for a premium cost.

Professional Transportation
Dedicated Car Seat Transportation Services: This is where you can find peace of mind. These companies specialize in family transportation and are equipped to handle your unique needs. Some well known options are DCAcar and Kidmoto.
Why This Is a Great Option: You can book your ride in advance and specify exactly how many car seats you need and what type (infant, convertible, or booster). These services prioritize safety and reliability, ensuring you and your family arrive on time and comfortably.
The Investment: While this will likely be the most expensive choice, many parents find the convenience and peace of mind to be worth the cost. It takes the stress out of a potentially difficult part of your travel day.
The DIY Approach
Bring Your Own Car Seats: If you’re going to need car seats at your destination anyway, bringing your own is often the most efficient and cost-effective solution.
The Strategy: Though it requires some extra effort, using your own car seats guarantees your child is in a familiar and safe seat. You’ll simply install it in your ride-share or taxi for the trip to the airport.
My Favorite Gear for the Journey:
-
- Infant: The Doona is a great all-in-one solution that functions as a car seat and a stroller, making it easy to navigate the airport.
- Toddler/Preschooler: The WAYB Pico is a lightweight, foldable car seat that’s easy to carry and FAA-approved.
- Big Kid Booster: The BubbleBum Inflatable Booster is perfect for saving space while still providing the necessary safety boost.
-

Doona for the win! It was our ride-or-die for over two years of travel. Not only did it simplify airport trips, but it even doubled as a cozy airplane bassinet. A must-have for tiny travelers!
Taking Public Transit
For those looking to save money and who don’t mind a little extra effort, public transportation is an option for each of the DMV’s major airports. However, be prepared to manage luggage and kids on buses or trains. This can be a great alternative for families with older, more independent kids.
-
- DCA (Reagan National Airport): This is the easiest airport to access via public transport. The airport has its own dedicated Metro station on the Yellow and Blue lines. The station is connected directly to the airport terminals by a covered walkway.
- IAD (Dulles International Airport): The Silver Line of the Metro now goes directly to Dulles, making it a viable option for those coming from DC. The station is connected to the terminal via a pedestrian tunnel with moving walkways, so you won’t have to brave the elements.
- BWI (Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport): This option requires a bit more coordination. From DC’s Union Station, you can take an Amtrak or MARC train to the BWI Marshall Airport Station. From there, a free shuttle bus runs every 10-15 minutes to the airport terminal.
Bonus Tips for a Smoother Trip
- TSA PreCheck or Global Entry: If you travel often, these programs can significantly reduce your time in security, which is a huge benefit when traveling with kids.
- Curbside Check-in: Check your airline’s policy for curbside check-in. This will reduce the amount of luggage you have to carry inside the terminal.
- Utilize Airport Play Areas: Many airports have dedicated play spaces for kids. Knowing where they are can make a huge difference before a long flight. Speaking of which, I’ve also put together A Guide to Playful Airport Playgrounds in the DMV to help your little ones burn off some energy.
Getting to the airport with kids in the DMV doesn’t have to be a major hurdle. By considering these options and choosing the one that best fits your family’s needs, you can start your trip on a positive, stress-free note.
