April showers bring May flowers. With the stunning blooming flowers around H Street and Capitol Hill as inspiration, we are making our own indoor May flower garden with flower crafts while continuing to shelter in place.
We made these flower crafts using supplies we already had at home. The wine corks and toilet paper rolls were easy to come by, but we definitely used creativity to make some substitutions. And, my kiddos will never know the difference.
While the egg carton flower bouquet was a bit challenging with my four-year-olds, the rest of these flower crafts are fairly easy and do not require too much setup or cleanup. We hope you have as much fun as we did making these flowers.
Wine Cork Snapdragons, Hydrangea, or Bluebonnets
Supplies:
- Wine corks (or other round objects for stamping)
- Green construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Paint
- White cardstock
Wine cork snapdragons are easy and adorable. My littles cut three stems and three leaves from green construction paper, glued them to a piece of white cardstock, and were ready for the big show. With no shortage of wine corks around the house, the kids used wine corks as stamps to make the flowers. They stamped up and down each stem, and loved it. We also experimented with a cap from a water bottle as a stamp, but it did not work as well—the paint just did not adhere to the plastic in the same way and it was harder to hold.
Egg Carton Flower Bouquet
Supplies:
- Egg carton (half)
- Paint
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Pipe cleaners
- Buttons for the center of flowers
- Glue (recommend hot glue)
- Heavy paper, canvas, or cardboard backing
- Ribbon (to tie a bow around the stems)
The egg carton flower bouquet genuinely is one of the cutest flower crafts (or things!) my kids have ever made. But, we need to be honest. This took more work from mom than anticipated. The first step is cutting the egg carton into individual flowers. Our bouquets had five individual flowers each. Cutting them was not my favorite task, but—again—the final product was worth it. The kiddos then painted each flower a different color. This was a bit of a mess with four-year-olds, as you need to paint the inside and outside of each flower. When the flowers were dry, we hot glued wooden beads into the center of each flower. (We do not have any buttons, so we used what we have. Any number of items could be a substitute here.)
Next, it was time to make a bouquet. I strongly recommend doing this on a heavy material. A canvas would be ideal. We initially glued the egg carton flowers to a piece of cardstock, and it just was not sturdy enough to hold the egg carton. So, we glued the cardstock to a piece of cardboard from one of our many Amazon delivery boxes. It worked perfectly.
Back to arranging our bouquet, we used green yarn for the stems. However, piper cleaners likely would be easier for kiddos to arrange. We glued the egg cartons flowers down with hot glue, and then used regular Elmer’s glue for the stems. If you have ribbon (we didn’t), adding a bow to the stems would be a nice touch.
Toilet Paper Roll Flower Stamps
Supplies:
- Toilet paper rolls
- Scissors
- Paint
- White paper
- Wine cork, bottle cap, round stamp for the center of flowers
Grab some of your coveted toilet paper rolls and get stamping. As a first step, a grown-up or big kid needs to make some cuts on the toilet paper roll to create the flower stamp. We made one stamp using straight cuts (the blue flowers) and another using triangles (the pink flowers). After stamping some flowers, we used wine corks to make yellow centers. Safe to say my kids had extra fun with this because using toilet paper rolls as a craft supply brought on the giggles.
Handprint Flower Crafts
Supplies:
- Construction paper
- Pencil to trace hand
- Scissors
- Glue
Simple and cute. Trace a kid’s hand, cut it out, glue it down. Add a stem and leaves. To kick it up a notch, add a frame. And voila, you made a flower craft. We are working on scissor proficiency in our house, and this gave us a good opportunity to work on those skills.
