Recently my husband and I snuck away for a luxurious Conrad staycation in Washington, DC. We were instantly reminded of how magical and beautiful downtown DC is!

When my husband and I first moved to DC in 2008, we spent so many nights out taking full advantage of all DC has to offer – dinners, shows, and museums. Fast forward thirteen years, four children, and one pandemic later, we have settled into a much more domestic existence. What was once dinner, drinks, and a show at Black Cat has turned into soccer games, pizza, and Disney on Ice.

But recently we had an opportunity to recapture some of that youthful magic with a Conrad staycation in City Center DC. The Conrad is a luxury Hilton hotel located right in the middle of DC’s best restaurants and shops. For us, it was the perfect backdrop to enjoy the city and reconnect without kids around.

Luxury hotel right here in DC

Conrad Washington, DC is an absolutely gorgeous hotel with a sleek, modern design. It also has a great “vibe” with folks walking around and enjoying themselves. When we walked into our room, we were overjoyed to see the clean, spacious room with an amazing view. And surprised by a bottle of Rose Brut on ice, a gift from Jo Malone, and a welcome note from the Conrad team! As we settled in and enjoyed the bubbly, we were shocked by how QUIET it was. It was an amazing opportunity to just sit and talk without any interruptions, with a beautiful view and incredibly comfortable bed!

During this wild pandemic, it felt good to finally step away from parenting duties and go to a different safe space. Masks are required indoors in all public spaces at Conrad Washington, DC except in your personal hotel room or if you are actively eating or drinking. Plus they are offering enhanced cleaning procedures that they developed in consultation with the WHO and CDC. Amazing!

Conrad Washington, DC is Centrally Located

The hotel location is perfect for a staycation. It is surrounded by shopping, restaurants, and is steps away from the National Portrait Gallery (a personal favorite museum). We had dinner reservations for 7pm, so after relaxing in the hotel we decided to stroll around downtown. So we just left — it was so nice not to have to get water bottles, tie shoes, grab snacks, etc. Instead, my husband and I were able to soak in the vibrant city energy while having a long, uninterrupted conversation! I almost forgot what those were like.

The Conrad is surrounded by high-end retail shops and some of the city’s best restaurants so we checked out a few shops. Tiffany’s is literally right next door. Then we walked over to the newly redesigned MLK library for a view from the rooftop. Wow! We even had a bit of time to check out the National Portrait Gallery before dinner.

Breakfast in Bed was a True Treat

The next morning we enjoyed the peaceful room and ordered breakfast in bed through their online ordering system. The attendant delivered the meal moments later and it was so delicious! We savored each tasty, quiet bite in peace. It was priceless and we were just overjoyed to feel so pampered and carefree.

If breakfast in bed isn’t your thing, breakfast is served starting at 6:30 am at Blue Willow on the 3rd Floor. Checkout isn’t until noon and guests can leave their car in the garage until 4PM, so we had plenty of time to do even more exploring in DC if we wanted to.

The Rooftop Bar, Summit, is Amazing

Conrad Washington, DC also has an amazing rooftop bar and restaurant, SUMMIT, which is open Thursday through Sunday. You do not have to stay at the hotel to enjoy the rooftop. We called ahead to reserve to make sure we had a seat. The views are gorgeous and it’s truly peaceful even with the bustling city below.

During our stay, we also popped by the indoor 3rd floor bar and restaurant, the Lounge. It is picturesque and spacious and there is even an outdoor patio. The Lounge is open daily starting at 11:30 am.

The Conrad is the Perfect DC Staycation

Our staycation at the Conrad allowed my husband and I to reconnect, to feel pampered in a beautiful space, and to recharge. We returned to our kids happy and are already planning our next visit! Enjoying a staycation at the Conrad was just what we needed even though we both didn’t fully realize we needed it. We were literally giddy and were also glad to be close enough to home in case of an emergency (but, of course, everyone was fine!).

Courtney Whittington
Courtney was born and raised in Louisiana where she met her husband (married in 2005). They have moved several times, but finally feel very settled in NW DC after moving back in 2016. She has four energetic kids: Cormac (2010), Evangeline (2013), Solomon (2016), and Antoinette (2019). She thinks motherhood is absolutely wonderful, but is constantly trying to figure out how to manage it all. She spends her days talking Star Wars, playing with legos, doing crafts, having tea parties, and chasing her toddler. Motherhood is wonderful and wild and in 2017 she banded together with other mothers to start DC Area Moms to inspire, learn, and grow together. She loves morning coffee, chocolate, chatting with people since she's an extrovert, a clean house (which is rare these days). She dislikes when her kids don't listen the first time, she abhors littering, and doesn't enjoy shopping.
