3 Ways to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the DMV

0

Hispanic Heritage Month is here, where we celebrate the accomplishment of the Hispanic/Latinx/Latino community in the United States. From September 15 to October 15, we have a chance to highlight our diversity and contributions to our nation. The tradition dates back to 1968, when President Lyndon Johnson signed the legislation that created the National Hispanic Heritage week. In over 50 years, this tradition has expanded and is now part of our yearly calendars, school activities and local festivals.

The DMV has a vibrant and growing Latino population. During the 1980s, the Salvadoran community had a fast grow in the District, bringing with them all the richness of their culture and the warmth of their people. During this month, the District is center of many important celebrations such as the Leadership Conference and Gala by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, and the Hispanic Heritage Awards from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation at the Kennedy Center.

As we prepare to embrace our diversity, here are three ways to get your family to participate in the Hispanic Heritage Month festivities.

1. Buy Books by Latinx Authors

Bookstores everywhere are featuring their amazing collection of books by Latinx authors. With classics to the latest releases widely available, you can find something that fits your favorite genre.

2. Visit a Local Latino-Owned Restaurant

Travel with your pallet by visiting one of the many Latino-owned restaurants in the area. The options are endless, from Mexico to Argentina, you can travel without a passport and learn about the different cultures and traditions.

3. Attend a Local Hispanic Heritage Festival

You can fill your calendar with the many events around the DMV. Fiesta DC has two days full of activities downtown, with live music, performances, food vendors, crafts and of course the large parade that is happening on Sunday,  September 28. You can also attend the Montgomery County events, where you will find lots of family friendly activities as well as community resources. In Arlington County, you can attend the Festival Latinoamericano on Friday, October 3rd. The celebrations spread across counties with neighborhoods also adding their special activities.

Plus, head to Cirque du Soleil, which has a Mexican inspired Luzia performance now until October 18! Use this link for 20% off tickets!! Or head to National Landing and enjoy Nala Noches with Latin Music from now until October 23.

At a time where cultural diversity is at the forefront of political division, lets embrace our diversity. Let’s celebrate how we come together from different ends of the world to the U.S.’s melting pot of opportunities.
