Geneva Day School Celebrates 60 Years of Outstanding Childhood Education
Your appetite for birthday fanfare (Happy 60th, Geneva!) and for fall festivity (hip, hip, hooray for the school’s annual tradition!). . .
“It’s always nice to see the wonderful community at Geneva,” enthused Geneva GPA President Mrs. Glenda Fu Smith, who donated her innovative touch to conjuring her third, consecutive Fall Festival on Saturday, October 18.
Nearly 200 from Geneva’s family and extended friends partook of the celebration. They embraced #GDSSpirit though a wardrobe of green and gold, and the occasional, seasonally-appropriate costume.
“It was great for parents to get together, to see each other, and to have children play together. It speaks volumes to have such community support,” Mrs. Smith stated.
Games, face-painting, and a recreated “pumpkin patch” sprawled next to a brightly-colored bounce house, sponsored booths, and a DJ platform.
Fun and accessible tunes, pounded out by local performer “DJ Destiny,” inspired dancing. As parents, grandparents, and young children devised unique choreography, some of the youngest helped themselves to special “Mrs. Smith devised instruments,” which inspired new musical scores.

For Mrs. Smith and many others, the highlight of the event occurred when “kids came up to sing Happy Birthday to Geneva. We had select students do this. They were very excited to sing,” Mrs. Smith declared.
Cake-pops, distributed from a special “Geneva Birthday Table,” sealed the deal for “royally good times.” Each festival-goer received a cake pop to honor the “sweetness of the event.”
According to Director Daisy Lizama, “Celebrating 60 years of excellence in early childhood education means honoring six amazing decades of nurturing young minds, supporting families, and building a strong and caring community.”
Such community knows it will often convene for heartwarming Geneva-engineered events. “(This) also reflects Geneva’s longstanding commitment to encouraging a lifelong love of learning,” stated Director Daisy Lizama.
Significantly, Mrs. Smith who introduced pony rides for a first time at the start of her tenure as Fall Festival Chair, brought them back due to popular demand. Ponies from GoodTime Amusements have proven so successful, they have returned every year since.
“It is a top favorite,” Mrs. Smith said of the gentle creatures who meander through Geneva’s Maryland Green School grounds. Equestrian guides hold the reins as small children experience the exhilarating thrill of “trotting” beneath autumn leaves.
When not reveling in the proposed activities of the Festival, attendees delighted in touring the school’s majestic campus. A bamboo forest, innovative playground, tree-stump obstacle course, fairy tale bridge, adventure slide, Monarch Butterfly Waystation, and Maryland Garden characterize the grounds as sprawling and imaginative.
Looking Back and Planning for the Future with Geneva
Mrs. Smith suggested that parents should be mindful of all the fabulous, forthcoming events in which they can participate. These include book fairs and a winter raffle, which will also be made available online, so that one can participate virtually.
Per the ponies which trot back year after year, Geneva looks forward to enduring traditions while innovating new ones. The school loves to welcome multiple generations of festival-goers. Most especially, it looks forward to continuing to offer excellence in early childhood education throughout both the academic year and the summer months. . .
