Happy New Year!
New Year’s Eve and 4th of July make the top of my list for most difficult holidays with toddlers and preschoolers. Late nights, fireworks, and no naps do not always make for a great end to the year. I don’t imagine overtired toddlers joining in on a joyful rendition of “Auld Lang Syne” as you ring in the New Year.
If you’re looking to do a DIY New Year’s Eve at home with your little people. I have some ideas for you.
1. Snacks and Treats
My aunt always says, “it’s not a party without chips and dip.” I’m obliged to agree. Our New Year’s Eve menu will include toddler friendly delicacies such as chips and dip, pigs in a blanket, and berries. Along with some adult charcuterie. We’re going for simple and yummy.
2. A Toast!
Plan a New Year’s Eve toast with a fun drink. We’re doing vanilla coke and root beer floats. You could also try a sparkling grape juice. I’ve also seen these fun cotton candy drinks. Create any fun fizzy drink and I’m sure the kids will love it!
3. Decorations
Feel free to use what you have to make some fun decor! A few balloons and streamers can go a long way. This year we’re trying a DIY balloon drop with a plastic tablecloth, balloons, and some ribbon.
4. The Countdown
There’s lots of options to choose from to still give kids the New Year’s Eve countdown experience. You can look on YouTube for your child’s favorite characters or a general countdown video.
5. Reflect
Take some time to talk about this past year with your kids. Look through favorite pictures and videos (if you’re like me you could spend the whole day doing that… woops). Maybe create a photo collage or year in review video to view with your kids. Discuss things that you’re looking forward to in the New Year.
Here’s to keeping it simple and fun at home! If staying home isn’t your thing- check out these New Year’s Eve events. However you spend your New Year’s, we’re wishing you all the best things in the year to come!
