In our house, my kids start planning their Halloween costumes in July, seriously. Our neighborhood goes all out with spooky decorations and haunted cul-de-sacs. On Halloween, we meet up with neighbors and walk the kids around trick-or-treating, it is really a fun night for kids and grownups. Before we go out and my kids fill their bags with sweet treats, I like to feed them a good dinner. Carrots cancel out Hershey bars, right? Here are our favorite, mostly healthy Halloween food for kids we enjoy before trick-or-treating.

1. Ghosts in the Pumpkin Patch

A friend brought this snack to a preschool Halloween party and I have been making it ever since. The kids can help prepare it and you can be as creative as you want to be.

Supplies:

  • 6 Clementines
  • 1 Celery Stalk
  • 3-4 bananas
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Regular size chocolate chips
  • Bag of Shredded Coconut (optional)
  • Green food coloring (optional)
  • Tray (I used a baking sheet)
  • Ziploc bag – Gallon size (optional)

Directions:

  • This is optional: I got a bag of shredded coconut and put in a plastic Ziploc bag and put in a few drops of green food coloring. Sealed the bag and shook it up. I used the green coconut flakes as the base of my pumpkin patch. I spread it out in an even layer on the tray.
  • Peel the Clementines without separating them.
  • Cut the celery into small thin strips to go in the tops of the clementines
  • Peel the bananas and cut them in half. Put two mini chocolate chips on as eyes and one big chocolate chip as a mouth towards the narrow end of the banana.
  • Arrange your pumpkin patch on your tray. You may have to make some cutting adjustments to the bananas to get them to stay up.
  • You will want to make this right before you are ready to eat it because the bananas will turn brown quickly.

2. Jack-o-Lantern pepper and vegetable tray

Another staple in our pre trick-or-treating meal is a vegetable tray. The kids love the Jack-o-Lantern pepper that holds the dip.

Supplies:

  • Orange bell pepper (that is round, pumpkin like, and that has a good stem)
  • Your favorite vegetable dip
  • Your favorite vegetables. We use carrots, cucumbers and pepper strips
  • Large Plate or Platter

Directions:

  • Using a sharp knife cut off the top of the pepper (keep it to be a cute topper for presentation), remove seeds, then carve your Jack-o-Lantern face. It can be as simple or creative.
  • Place the Jack-o-Lantern pepper in the middle of the platter and fill it with your favorite dip. Arrange your vegetables around it and enjoy!

3. Mummy Hotdogs

Halloween food takes on classic pigs in a blanket.

Supplies:

  • Hot Dogs of your choice
  • Refrigerated Crescent Roll Dough
  • Non stick baking sheet or Spray oil on regular sheet pan

Directions:

  • Preheat oven per your dough package directions, mine was 375.
  • Separate your refrigerated crescent dough along the dotted lines.
  • We used one triangle per hot dog.
  • Using a pizza cutter or knife, cut the triangle into strips.
  • I gave each child a wax paper square with the dough strips and a hot dog.
  • Wrap up your mummy, leaving some space for the eyes.
  • Transfer to baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes (per your dough directions).
  • Use mustard or ketschup for the eyes.

4. Spooky Mini Pizzas

Pizza is a staple in our Halloween meal, whether we order (thanks Papa Johns for making the Jack-o-Lantern pizzas) or make it ourselves. My kids love making their own pizzas, especially when they are spooky.

Supplies:

  • Pizza Sauce
  • Flat Bread/Naan (I found small round ones at the grocery store by Stonefire that were perfect for little hands)
  • Shredded Mozzarella
  • Toppings of your choice
    • We used pepperoni cut into triangles for the Jack-o-Lantern face
    • Jumbo pitted black olives for the spider
    • Mozzarella cheese sticks peeled into strips and olives for the mummy face

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 375
  • Cut jumbo olives in half and some into long strips for the spider’s body and legs
  • Assemble pizzas – I love to see what the kids come up with
  • Bake for 7-10 minutes.

My kids ages 2-10 all helped in making these recipes, besides the cutting they were able to do most of it. These are all quick, easy Halloween food ideas and can be made for a small family or a big party.
