Explore Leesylvania State Park Beach in Northern Virginia

0
Like many others, my family is trying to soak up the last days of summer before the hustle and bustle of the school year starts. So last weekend, we decided to enjoy a picnic lunch by the beach. I loaded up my handy picnic backpack (I have this one, but amazon has some similar alternatives) and headed just up the road to my nearest state park in Woodbridge, VA. Check out Leesylvania State Park for a beach picnic in Northern Virginia!

Wait, a beach in Northern Virginia?!

Thats right, Leesylvania State Park has a beach—and its perfect for a picnic! It’s small but if you are looking to enjoy nature and put your toes in the sand, it gets the job done.

It’s worth noting that while you can see people swimming in the river, it is not recommended because of the hazardous conditions, but you can fish on the pier. As you walk along the pier, you cross over from Virginia to Maryland, which my son found really cool.

So Much to Do

While we opted for a leisurely picnic and a walk along the pier, the park has plenty to do. We enjoyed our day and can’t wait to enjoy more of the amenities. Families can also enjoy:

  • hiking trails
  • a playground
  • rent kayaks, canoes, and sailboats
  • participate in children’s programs like Junior Ranger events and fishing tournaments
  • snacks from Breakwater Store (open Memorial Day to Labor Day, Friday to Sunday)
  • public restrooms and park office if you need help
