When someone has a big, small, or really any life event, my go-to is to send food. As a busy mom, as much as I would love to make something and drop it off for friends, that’s usually not possible. So, instead, I’ve taken to ordering and sending my favorite food gifts.
I find that food is one of the best ways to show people you’re thinking of them and you care. Food is something everyone needs and wants. Sending food helps take something off someone’s plate – they have to think a little less during whatever it is they are going through. And one of my personal favorite things about sending food gifts is it can be a “right now” or a “later” thing.
Personally, I like to make the decision of what exactly to send and not ask who I am sending to too much and make them make more decisions. I pick the place and what from the menu, although I do ask for any dietary restrictions I may not know about or specific preferences. I really only ask about when to send, but also make it as specific as possible, like what day of a specific week.
Here are my favorite food gifts to send, which suggestions of some local spots where to get them!
Breakfast
- Bagels – check out this list from DCMoms on the best bagel shops in the area (which most you can send delivery!). Call Your Mother is one of my favorites, with locations across the area.
- Doughnuts – Dunkin’ and Krispy Kreme are always a winner, but if you are dropping off yourself, consider Donut Run. It’s amazing. You and your friends will thank me later.
- Breads, pastries, and breakfast plates – If you have a local favorite, send that! Tatte isn’t local to DC, but there are lots in the area if you need inspiration. You can also send something like Wolferman’s which is easily freezable.
Lunch and Dinner
- Tacos – Local chain District Taco can really hit the taco itch.
- Pizza – Honestly, you can’t go wrong with pizza from anywhere.
- Greek – Consider hometown hero Cava. Also think about Greek Deli.
- Burgers (and all the deliciousness that can do with it like fries) – Ghostburger should be your go to.
- BBQ – Try sending Hill Country or Mission BBQ.
Other
- Cookies – Insomnia is open super late, so great to send to people who are up in the middle of the night.
- Ice cream – I’ve sent Jeni’s many a time as gifts.
- Anything from Goldbelly
And if all else fails and you’re really stuck, sending a gift card to anywhere that delivers or places like Uber Eats or Door Dash is a great way to show you care too!
