4 Volunteering Opportunities for Kids in the DMV

What could be a better way to teach big concepts like gratitude, empathy, and caring for others than by volunteering? There are tons of ways to be involved as an adult, but it can be trickier to find these same volunteering opportunities for kids. In the last few months, I’ve kept my ear to the ground in hopes of compiling a list. A huge thank you to all of the amazing local families who shared their ideas to make this resource happen! Be sure to check out these other ways to volunteer alongside your child from home.

1. Comfort Cases

This organization is devoted to making a child’s transition to foster care one that is filled with love and dignity. They provide backpacks or bags full of essential and comforting items based on the child’s age.

How to volunteer: All ages are welcome to help, there’s a job for everyone! Kids can sort donations and pack a case in the main location. Another way they can be involved is by setting up a donation drive at their school/church/youth organization. For more information about either of these opportunities, see Comfort Cases’ Volunteer page.

2. Greater DC Diaper Bank

The Greater DC Diaper Bank started as a way to provide diapers to families in need. They have quickly grown into a resource for all things baby-related. In addition to distributing over 5.5 million diapers, they have expanded to sharing additional essential baby items such as like-new baby equipment. They have also recently added, “The Monthly” which is a program designed to help families with the cost of period-related items.

How to volunteer: All ages are welcome to volunteer where they can sort, pack, and organize items. Very young children are welcome to attend and play in a designated space while older family members get to work. Kids can also host a drive at their school/church/youth organization. For more information about either of these opportunities, see DC Diaper Bank Volunteer page.

3. Manna Food Center

Manna Food Center is focused on ending hunger in Montgomery County. From distributing rescued food to soup kitchens to gather food donations to feed thousands of community members each year, they make sure to feed the hungry with high-quality meals.

How to volunteer: Kids aged 7+ are welcome to help out in their warehouse packing and distributing meals. Kids can also host a food drive at their school/church/youth organization. For more information about either of these opportunities, see Manna Food Center Volunteer page.

4. A Wider Circle

A Wider Circle is focused on ending poverty by giving people a fresh start in a comfortable living space. In addition, they support those entering/returning to the workforce. After gathering clothing, furniture, and home decor donations from around the area, families can choose as much as they need to take home.

How to volunteer: All ages are welcome to help at this center. Young children help gather and sort donated toys onto the showroom floor. Older children may help sort clothing or move smaller items as they are able. For more information about donating or volunteering, see A Wider Circle Volunteer page.

Don’t forget to donate those things that do not “spark joy” anymore! Check out our post of places to bring previously-loved things.
