Here is our Q&A with Lolita Mason

1. Tell us about your career journey starting as a nurse and moving into the non-profit space.

I am a native of the District of Columbia, that early on discovered my passion for early childhood education and nursing from a young age. Following a decade-long tenure in the legal sector, where I provided invaluable litigation support for a local law firm, later redirecting my path toward nursing. My interest in serving the homeless population developed after serving as a volunteer on behalf of the law firm at a local women’s shelter. This led me to the University of the District Columbia, where I thrived academically and emerged as the valedictorian of my nursing class.

In 2000, I began my professional journey as a licensed nurse, commencing my career at a women’s clinic located within a naval base. Transitioning to the non-profit sector in 2002, I assumed the role of Wellness Center Manager at N Street Village, a pivotal organization offering housing and support services to homeless women in DC. While at this position I recognized the significance of delivering comprehensive health services, aiming not only to educate but also to empower women in their healing journey. Witnessing firsthand the resilience and strength of the women at N Street, I forged partnerships with community service providers and volunteers, enriching the support network for over six years.

Services provided in the wellness center included dental and eye care, women’s health, stress management, pranayama, massage, acupuncture and acupressure, aerobics, meditation, poetry and arts and crafts. Despite my ventures elsewhere, I remained connected to N Street Village, actively volunteering until my return in 2018. Presently, I serve as the Program Manager of a Permanent Supportive Housing Program, continuing my impactful work within the organization.

2. What advice do you have for self-care for professionals in the social work space?

I firmly embrace the belief that the development and healing of our communities
are collective responsibilities. I understand the necessity of a united effort,
acknowledging that it takes a committed and radical village to mend communities that
have endured neglect and trauma. Despite the challenges and obstacles that may arise,
I remain steadfast in my conviction that the journey towards community healing is
always worthwhile. I also hold the belief that a life dedicated to serving others is a
truly fulfilling life. To manage the potential impact of serving the population, I
recommend prioritizing your physical and emotional health by practicing activities that
promote well-being such as sleep, exercise, and spending time in nature.

Beyond professional commitments, I embrace my role as a devoted wife of
over 33 years, a nurturing mother of three, and a cherished grandmother of three. I
find joy in family moments and showcase my culinary skills as an avid food enthusiast
and excellent cook. Exploring the vibrant cityscape, I indulge in leisurely strolls
through local parks and landmarks, immersing in the diverse cultures and scenic
beauty of the neighborhoods. With a deep appreciation for music across genres, I
find solace in reading and crafting poetry, nurturing my creative spirit.
