Five Ways to Keep the Cavities Away this Summer

0

While it’s easy to let oral hygiene routines slide over summer break, it’s important to keep your family’s dental health top of mind. Here’s a few tips from Coulter & Casper Pediatric Dentistry to ensure your child’s smile stays healthy and happy all summer long!

1. Brush Twice a Day

School may be out, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t stick to your oral hygiene routine! The rule of two is simple — brush two times a day for two minutes at a time. Make it fun by trying new toothpastes or letting your little one pick out their own toothbrush.

Two minutes may seem like an eternity to your child, but you can pass the time by playing their favorite song or video while brushing.

2. Don’t Forget to Floss

By age 6, your child should be on a good flossing routine. Make sure you help your child floss at night, before they brush. Flossing may take some extra practice, but it’s the best way to get to those hard-to-reach places between the teeth.

3. More Water, Less Sugar

Don’t reach for that juice box!

Parents, the best way to quench your child’s thirst, keep their bodies healthy, hydrated and their teeth clean, is to drink lots of water throughout the summer. Skip the sugary drinks and strengthen your child’s teeth with a refreshing glass of water.

4. Choose Tooth-Friendly Foods

Keep your little one’s oral health in mind when snacking this summer! Beat the heat and your child’s sweet tooth with fresh fruit or Greek yogurt popsicles. Calcium-rich foods, like cheese and leafy greens, can help fight cavities by strengthening tooth enamel.

5. Schedule A Summer Check-Up

Beat the back-to-school rush and schedule your child’s routine dental cleaning this summer!

Regular dental visits are key to preventing and detecting cavities early. That’s why Dr. Charlie and the team at Coulter & Casper Pediatric Dentistry focus on a treat-and-teach approach that helps families develop at-home routines to maintain their oral health between visits.
