1. Lean Into the Library

The library may be a no-brainer summer learning hack, but the DC Public Library offers so many opportunities to learn for free. First, step into any location and you’re greeted with a calendar of events that are great for all ages. Some libraries offer LEGO and gaming afternoons. Make sure you get your child a library card so that they can access the computers in the children’s area where they can play games like ABC Mouse for free. While you’re there, get expert advice on new books to read with your child. Many locations offer coloring sheets and a toddler section. At the MLK Library, your child can burn some energy on the slide. While at MLK, check out the Fabrication Lab where you can learn how to use the 3D printer and more — all for free! Don’t forget to sign up for the Summer Reading Program as a family to win prizes!

2. Explore National Parks

During the summer, getting outside is a great way to learn together as a family in the summer. Rock Creek Park offers a great calendar of events to inspire young naturalists learn about the plants and animals in the DC Area. The Rock Creek Nature Center and Planetarium is a great place to learn, and it has many family events throughout the summer. The Pierce Mill Visitor Center is a great place to picnic and has access to many shady, family-friendly trails. While you’re outside, ask your child what they observe. What do they see, feel, or hear? Then, talk about what you observe together.

3. Spend an Afternoon at a Smithsonian Museum

Free and open every day of the week, the Smithsonian Institute has 17 museums and the zoo for you to visit. As you plan your visit, you may find ways to explore the museums at home — great for rainy days! Check out the touchless scavenger hunts and listen to the Sidedoor podcast to learn more about the Smithsonian. (Wait — this means you may be learning something over the summer too!)

4. Get Off the Screen With Summer Learning Activities

When screen time is getting to be too much, take screen time breaks with these summer learning ideas. Gamers may be persuaded to switch gears with Hour of Code — coding activities you can do together or apart from your child as you cook dinner. Children who love shows may enjoy activities, crafts, and recipes inspired by their favorite shows on PBS KIDS or Nickelodeon. Or make your own characters using recyclable materials at home or at the Merry Pin, which often has a free Trash to Treasure night for kids.

5. Do it All With DPR

Summer learning is easy with DPR. With community events throughout the summer, DPR offers everyone the opportunity to learn and grow. Walk into your community center and explore options for everyone — playgrounds, pools, splash pads, games, and more. Getting out in the community is a great way to learn over the summer. Making new friends and trying something new can encourage your child to do the same when the school year begins.
