5 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day 2026 with Kids

0

As parents, we’re always searching for activities that entertain our kids while also teaching them about important issues. With Earth Day around the corner (April 22), this year’s theme is “Our Power Our Planet.” In recent years, I’ve been on a mission to cut down on plastic use in my household – not just for the sake of our planet but also for the well-being of my family. I’ll share a couple of my favorite eco-friendly swaps with you shortly. But first, let’s dive into a few engaging ways to celebrate Earth Day 2026 with kids!

1. Explore Nature on a Kid-Directed Hike

Get ready to channel your inner explorer! What better way to honor Earth Day 2026 than by soaking up some nature? Whether it’s a nearby trail or a leisurely stroll through your neighborhood, let your kids take the lead for at least thirty minutes. And, while you’re at it, let’s do our part to keep Mother Nature clean by picking up any stray trash we come across.

2. Grow Your Own Window Garden

It’s time to get your hands dirty – in the best way possible! Grab a window garden kit from KiwiCo and let the kiddos dive into some hands-on fun. They’ll love putting together their own suction-cup planters and watching their green beans and squash sprout to life right before their eyes.

3. Install a Window Bird Feeder

Even if you’re not a bird enthusiast, I promise this window bird feeder will entertain adults and kids alike. Simply attach it to any window and get ready for some feathered friends to drop by for a snack.

4. Attend an Earth Day Storytime at Hirschhorn

For a family-friendly outing, consider visiting the Hirschhorn museum for a special Earth Day story time. Children will enjoy soft play, art creation, read-aloud, and a gallery tour.

5. Make Eco-Friendly Swaps at Home

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve made a conscious effort to ditch the plastic at home and here are two of my favorite swaps. I recently ditched all our plastic sippy cups for a durable, eco-friendly alternative. We love Elk and Friends Kids & Toddler Cups, which I can attest have been dropped repeatedly without a crack!  Similarly, I ditched the plastic Tupperware for glass containers, and I love these Glass Food Storage Containers with Snap Locking Lids.

By weaving these eco-activities and swaps into your everyday routine, you’re not just celebrating Earth Day 2026 – you’re planting the seeds of environmental responsibility in your kiddos. Because even the smallest actions can make a world of difference!

Happy Earth Day 2026!
